Narcotics Anonymous

Narcotics Anonymous is a free, non-profit fellowship of people for whom drugs have become a major problem. NA’s program is open to addicts of all ages, nationalities, cultures, creed, gender identity, and religions. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using.

Narcotics Anonymous offers one promise to our members, FREEDOM from active addiction.

We focus on the disease of addiction rather than any particular drug.

Our message is broad enough to attract addicts from any social class or nationality. When new members come to meetings, our sole interest is in their desire for freedom from active addiction and how we can be of help.

Narcotics Anonymous had its first meetings in South Africa in the mid 1980’s – research indicates Chatsworth in Kwa-Zulu Natal and Hillbrow (Johannesburg) held the first NA meetings in very close sucession. Observatory (Western Cape) followed soon after. These meetings were typically small, and without much literature and support.

With the growth of fellowship in the 1990’s, Narcotics Anonymous SA saw regular meetings attendance, and offered more than one meeting a week in the aforementioned cities. This has subsequently grown to approximately 380 face-to-face meetings held weekly throughout South Africa.
