SPCA Amanzimtoti
The Amanzimtoti SPCA has been in the greater Amanzimtoti area for some 27 years, initially operating out of small offices in Warner Beach. In 1990 we moved into our premises in Nyati Road and still operate from there. Our area of operation is from the Umlaas Canal in the north to Hibberdene in the South and inland for approximately 30 kms.
We run our mobile clinics 2 mornings a week in the underprivileged, previously disadvantaged and rural areas. We offer education on animal care, dipping, vaccinations, sterilisation and primary veterinary treatment for the animals and when possible supply animal food for the needy animals.
Each year we treat approximately 2500 animals at our mobile clinics (this is over and above the animals we deal with at the SPCA) and over the years we have seen a marked improvement in the condition of the animals seen at the clinics.
On a daily basis we deal with lost, found, unwanted, confiscated, abused animals….. and the list goes on!
Our inspectors respond to emergency calls of animal cruelty and investigate reports of animal abuse or neglect and where necessary rescue animals and file charges with the police for further investigation and prosecution.
We deal with animal related difficulties, for example feral cats at business premises and stray animals on the roads
We sterilize animals to control numbers of strays and unwanted animals.
We have an outreach program in the disadvantaged communities which include regular mobile clinics.
Lost animals are brought to the SPCA and are kept at the kennels for a 7 (seven) day period. This is to allow the legal owner time to claim their pet back. If the dog or cat (or any other animal) is not claimed by the owner it is then put up for adoption. All animals are sterilized before adoption and a pre home check is done.
Since we receive NO Government or Provincial Grants each District SPCA is responsible for financing it’s own operation which is mostly done by on-going fundraising efforts and donations
